Twenty years across law, accountancy and advisory, in London and New Zealand, have shown me how much of growth in professional services stays the same wherever you sit. The services change, the clients change and the market conditions change - but firms win work for the same handful of reasons - and lose it for the same handful too.

I spent fifteen years at PwC, latterly leading the national business development, growth and client development teams and working across the full range of the firm's services. I led go-to-market strategy, major pursuits, sector and capability strategy, pricing and commercial discipline, and embedded the sales governance and CRM discipline needed for growth to hold. I’ve also spoken to hundreds of clients about what is most important to them – which is not always the big-ticket items - the little things matter too. Before PwC, I held business development and marketing roles in London with international law and accountancy firms, along with a stint in a high-growth financial services startup.

Growth isn't complicated, most of the time.  The fundamentals are simple enough: play where your strengths meet real client demand, stay relevant to both the clients you have and the clients you want, and keep showing them your value. The challenging part is getting clear on exactly growth will come from – and then being prepared to commit your effort and investments to those priorities – in a way that’s sustainable through the next busy period.
